The NFL decided to reinstate Myles Garrett on Wednesday February 12th, after suspending the Cleveland Browns’ defensive end indefinitely after ripping Pittsburgh Steelers’ backup quarterback, Mason Rudolph’s helmet off and using it as a weapon in a brawl on November 14th.
The brawl took place during the last play of the game when the Browns were up 21-7.
The decision to uphold the suspension came after an appeal by Garrett, in which Garrett argued that Rudolph called him a racial slur.
Mason Rudolph denied Garrett’s claims of inciting him with a racial slur. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said that the league reviewed footage from the play in question and found “no such evidence” to supports Garrett’s claims.
The Browns have welcomed Garrett back “with open arms” and they have stated that they “ look forward to having his strong positive presence back as a teammate, player and person in our community.”
Garrett’s reinstatement has drawn harsh criticism directed at the NFL from ESPN’s First Take cohost Stephan A. Smith. Smith feels that Garret should have been suspended “at least one more game, the season opener,” because the NFL should remind “ everybody this is why he’s gone the rest of y’all bet not think about doing something like that.”
Myles Garrett had 10 sacks before his suspension, and the Browns ended the season with six wins and ten losses.
